Prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification, East Germany was regarded in western democracies as a ruthless surveillance machine under the auspices of the dreaded Stasi. But, as historian Katya Hoyer shows in her counterintuitive study, Beyond the Wall, citizens enjoyed full employment and a reasonable standard of living. Join Hoyer in conversation with leading German novelist Jenny Erpenbeck, who also grew up in the East and whose writing has been deeply informed by the experience. Chaired by Nick Barley.
