David Diop returns with Beyond the Door of No Return, a historical epic set off the coast of Senegal. Drawing on the lyricism of Senegalese oral traditions, Diop recounts an escape from enslavement. Leila Aboulela’s River Spirit takes place a century later in 1890s Sudan where a family is caught up in revolutionary struggle. Hear these two writers discuss their own fascinating approaches to historical fiction.
