In October 2022, Shehan Karunatilaka’s life changed forever when his novel was announced as the newest winner of the Booker Prize. Praised by one reviewer as ‘relentlessly, shockingly funny’, The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a hugely enjoyable story set in 1980s Colombo – and in a parallel afterlife where Maali finds himself. Today Karunatilaka explains the background to his novel, dicussing life, death, and the echoes of civil war in Sri Lanka with Bidisha Mamata.
