America: Truth, Lies, Power and Division

In their latest book, Surviving Autocracy, journalist Masha Gessen reflects that ‘Most Americans in the age of Trump are… subjected to constant, sometimes debilitating anxiety’. An anxiety essentially caused by living in ‘two realities’ - one Trumpian and one fact-based. ‘The need to pay constant attention to the lies is exhausting, and it is compounded by the feeling of helplessness in the face of the ridiculous and repeated lies.’
