Drawing Stories

Drawing Stories

This year’s Baillie Gifford Children’s Programme celebrates the remarkable role of the illustrator in bringing picture books to life. It is hard not to reflect on our favourite children’s stories without conjuring up the characters drawn by their illustrators – from the Gruffalo, to Elmer, to Mog the Cat – the magic of those characters has become synonymous with our favourite stories, giving them a joyous visual narrative.

For this series of online events, we’ve invited some of the most exciting illustrators working today to demonstrate how they draw their characters and create the worlds for a story to reside in. Alongside the events being broadcast on our website video pages, youngsters – and grown-ups – can dive into our daily draw-along sessions with illustrators, which broadcast at 9.30am every day of the Festival on our Facebook page.

In the first of two bumper Book Festival shows from the award-winning author of The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson treats you to some lively storytelling from her magical book, The Teeny Weeny Genie, followed by a guest appearance from bestselling...
