Paul Howarth

Set in the deserted outback of 19th Century Australia about family, empire and race.

Author Paul Howarth was born in the UK before relocating to Melbourne in his 20s. After living there for six years and gaining dual-citizenship, Paul moved back to the UK with his family. He received the Malcolm Bradbury Scholarship allowing him to complete the UEA Creative Writing MA in 2015. Now a debut author of Only Killers and Thieves, Paul’s beautifully written work is gaining traction.

In Only Killers and Thieves Tommy McBride and his brother Billy return to their isolated family home to discover that their parents have been brutally murdered. Haunted and alone, their desperate search for the killers leads them to the charismatic but deadly Inspector Noone and his Queensland Native Police – an infamous arm of colonial power whose sole purpose is the ‘dispersal’ of Indigenous Australians in protection of settler rights.

A gripping and vivid novel, Paul Howarth brings early Queensland to life in a savage portrayal of historical Australia which resonates across generations.
