Audience engagement

At the Edinburgh International Book Festival, a book is the start of something bigger – interactions that challenge the way we see the world, conversations that help us imagine a better future, and experiences that bring us together to make memories.
There are hundreds of events to choose from, for all ages and tastes – from household names, to debut authors, and international voices you won’t find anywhere else, and expertly selected chairpeople make sure our on-stage discussions are the most interesting around. With one-of-a-kind events like performances, podcast recordings, dinners, and workshops – in addition to in conversation events – our programme goes far beyond what you might expect of a Book Festival. And our events aren’t complete without a chance for you to get involved and contribute your thoughts, with time and space reserved for audience Q&As or interaction in all of our events (except those which are performance based - though applause still counts).
Our dedicated Children and Families programme offers over a hundred events for younger readers, with lots of chances to get creative, jump around, and maybe even meet your favourite character in real life (we promise the Gruffalo is actually really friendly)! There’s also a special Young Adults programme, curated with a focus on readers under 30 (but open to anyone who’s young at heart). We really hope that whoever you are, and whatever you’re into, you’ll find something that makes your mind spark and imagination sing.
The Festival site is a fun and relaxed environment to meet friends, have big discussions, and kick back with your family – and you don’t need a ticket to enjoy it. It’s all yours. And with a significant free and Pay What You Can events programme, as well as accessible pricing options, and online events, everyone is welcome to enjoy the Festival in the way that works best for you.
"A wide range of authors, known and not so well known. Excellent curation second to none of writers and interviewers makes for fascinating in-depth conversations – the Book Festival's unique strength in my view. Love the venue and location, love the lounge area and shared reading, love the variety on offer in the bookshop... I'm a huge fan of this Festival!"
