Kathryn Briggs: Art and Resistance

Kathryn Briggs is an internationally recognised, award-winning graphic novelist, zine creator, arts educator and independent publisher. Her short comics have been featured in anthologies including Treehouse Comic, Dirty Rotten Comics, Meanwhile…, and Sliced Quarterly. She is also Val McDermid's collaborator on Resistance, a graphic novel that takes place over the summer solstice weekend as a mystery virus tears through a crowd of 150,000 people who have gathered for a music festival. Away from her own practice, Briggs teaches illustration and participates in grassroots community organising, a sensibility that shines through her own practice. Briggs speaks with Sasha de Buyl, Director of Cúirt International Festival of Literature (and an illustrator and comics maker herself) about her approach to turning her own ideas – and other people's – into art, in this event filmed live at the 2021 Edinburgh International Book Festival.
