For nature writer Neil Ansell, author of the Wainwright Prize and Highland Book Prize shortlisted The Circling Sky, progressive hearing loss was a spur to hunt down nature’s rarest and most beautiful sounds while he still can, as documented in his new book The Edge of Silence. Today Ansell talks to us about becoming critically attuned to listening to the natural world and how he has learned to separate their sounds from commotion of everyday life.
