Roisin Kiberd & Lauren Oyler: Online and Disconnected

The generation who were ‘raised by the internet’ are fully-fledged adults now, but the web has become a strange parent: a cold, detached being that knows everything about us. Our relationship with the internet is probably one which psychoanalysts will be specialising in soon enough. Thankfully, until then, writers and thinkers like Lauren Oyler and Roisin Kiberd can help us navigate our strange bond. Oyler’s debut novel, Fake Accounts, is a subversive and witty read that examines the fluid notion of online truth, mistaken identity and the erosion of self-knowledge. Roisin Kiberd’s collection of essays, The Disconnect: A Personal Journey Through the Internet, explores the blurry lines between our online and ‘real’ lives and asks what the costs are of living in an endlessly connected way. Bringing together fiction and non-fiction, this event will make you rethink what you thought you knew about the online realm.
