Butter has had the book industry in a frenzy since it appeared in print. As bookshops scrambled to keep Asako Yuzuki’s word-of-mouth sensation in stock, it shot to the top of bestseller lists, winning Waterstones Book of the Year 2024. This strange, thrilling, incisive novel stars a serial killer chef who poisons her lovers deliciously and the journalist determined to get the inside scoop. Though Butter might be her first translated into English, Yuzuki has written over 20 novels in her native Japanese and it’s a delight to welcome her today. She talks to us about her novel’s themes of sexism, fatphobia, the pleasures of consumption, and the unfairness of beauty standards, as well as her mission to elevate the status of Japan’s women through powerful storytelling.
