Mobile Library Service

Since Autumn 2025, we’ve worked with eight care homes, delivering weekly creative sessions for older adults in tandem with the Mobile Library’s visits to each home. The sessions were led by Ellen Renton, Julie McNeill, Ken Cockburn, and Xana Marwick alongside trainee artists Lucy Lauder and Hugh Turnbull – our care home writer in residence team. Each took a slightly different shape depending on the needs of each group of residents, but the focus was broadly on using shared reading as a way into storytelling, reminiscence, and conversation.
Residents and care home staff who’ve been involved have told us how much they loved the chance to ‘express their thoughts and memories creatively through words’ and that they looked forward to the sessions each week.
This work is made possible thanks to support from Sir Ian Rankin and Ms Miranda Harvey.
"The sessions created a lovely calm space that captured the attention of the residents with higher support needs... I know there were quite a few disappointed faces when it came to an end."
